This photo of Hypomenitis enigma was taken in the southern Andes of Ecuador (2000m asl, Zamora-Chinchipe province) two hours after the butterfly had emerged from its chrysalis.
Poster for Montpellier Science Festival
In 2019, Monica Arias presented this poster for the Science Festival in Montpellier. Hypomenitis enigma lives in the Andine tropical rainforest. On the right, electronic microscopy images of the transparent zone show in front and top view the nanoprotuberances on the surface of the wing membrane, which functions as efficient antireflective devices (top), and the highly modified hair-like scales erected on the wing membrane (bottom).
Experiment at Montpellier Botanical Garden
in 2017, Monica Arias organized a butterfly hunting in the botanical garden in Montpellier. Dead butterflies had been placed on leaves, along a path in the forest of the garden. Participants had to tell Monica which butterflies they detected along the path. This experiment led to the article Arias et al. 2019.
